Taking Off The Armor
In a world rife with complexity and conflicts, we often protect ourselves with metaphorical armor—a barrier of resilience born from past trials meant to shield us. Yet, this armor, while a sign of strength, can also prevent the connections we need to flourish, especially in professional settings.
In the competitive arenas of work, where authenticity and vulnerability might seem at odds with success, I contend that these qualities are not just valuable—they are crucial. They foster environments where trust and collaboration flourish, driving us toward ever-greater achievements.
Brené Brown puts it well: “You can choose courage or comfort, but not both.” Her words highlight why we might feel the need to guard ourselves, yet the challenge is to remain open and honest even in adversity.
I recall a transformative moment during a Synergy Studio workshop with a large tech company’s leadership team. After presenting research findings about their culture, one leader bravely shared, “Honestly, I’m relieved to see that I’m not alone in the challenges I see on our team.” This admission sparked a collective sigh of relief, a palpable sense of unity and understanding. It was a powerful reminder that our struggles are often not unique to us and can be overcome together.
In professional environments where our achievements and growth are at stake, it’s tempting to keep our guard up. However, it’s precisely here that being vulnerable—using it as a deliberate strength—becomes most impactful. This doesn’t mean exposing ourselves to harm but choosing moments when openness builds trust and fosters creativity.
Such a shift from defense to connection can transform workplaces and enhance our lives, providing a pathway to personal and professional fulfillment. Knowing when to protect ourselves and when to open up is a crucial balance.
The truth is that the armor that got you here may not get you to the places you want to go. Along your path, you’ve earned loads of wisdom, which can be greater than any armor that shielded you in the past.
By embracing vulnerability, we open ourselves to deeper relationships and a more authentic life, where protecting and connecting go hand in hand, leading to a more interconnected and fulfilling existence.
“To live wholeheartedly, we must engage with life fiercely, embracing both its joys and sorrows.”
